Discover a 7-day Briare Canal barge cruise itinerary in France, featuring charming villages, historic locks, and gourmet dining aboard The Meanderer!Â
Why Choose a Briare Canal Barge Cruise?
When I added “chartering a fully staffed barge on the Briare Canal†to our family’s bucket list in France, I wasn’t entirely sure how it would go over. With an active family accustomed to high-energy adventures, the idea of a slow-paced barge trip in August aboard The Meanderer had me second-guessing myself. On the flight to France, there were plenty of playful jabs—“Would this be too slow, too quiet, too boring for everyone?†But I held firm, and what unfolded was nothing short of magical: an intimate, unforgettable family experience filled with just enough new discoveries and adventures to satisfy even the most skeptical among us.
The Briare Canal—one of the oldest canals in France—proved to be a perfect choice thanks to its unique features and serene beauty. We marveled at the Briare Aqueduct, an engineering masterpiece that carries the canal over the Loire River. We also admired the historic Seven Lock Staircase, a remarkable feat of 17th-century ingenuity. These landmarks added depth and wonder to our journey, captivating even our most restless family members. The canal’s rich history became a vibrant backdrop for our adventure, sparking conversations and curiosity as we gently cruised along its waters.
The towns we passed through added an unexpected layer of authenticity to the experience. While there were certainly other tourists, this part of France remained blissfully quiet and calm, offering a genuine glimpse into rural French life. Whenever The Meanderer was moored, we wandered through cobblestone streets, discovering local markets overflowing with fresh produce, charming bakeries, cozy cafés, and antique shops tucked away in quiet corners. These stops gave us just enough exploration to satisfy our adventurous spirits while still embracing the laid-back rhythm of canal life.
The barge itself, The Meanderer, was an ideal match for our family. With three cozy ensuite bedrooms, a spacious lounge and dining area complete with a fully stocked bar, and an upper deck perfect for dining under the stars, soaking in the hot tub, or cycling through villages on the provided bikes, it offered everything we could have hoped for. Every meal was a foodie’s dream: gourmet dishes, never-repeated wines, and a daily array of French cheeses that showcased the country’s rich culinary traditions. Even more impressive was the crew, who were outstanding in every way—warm, professional, and incredibly accommodating without ever making us feel like a bother. They let my husband take the helm for a bit, the chef made a custom pizza for our daughter one night, and even picked up fresh limes just so we could enjoy margaritas at sunset. The experience felt completely personalized from start to finish.
The barge journey is all-inclusive, with everything—meals, drinks, excursions, and experiences—thoughtfully taken care of. The only additional cost is the crew gratuity at the end of the trip, which felt well-earned and deeply appreciated.
This intimate journey was the perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and indulgence.
Each day brought its own special adventure—beginning with a 4:40 a.m. wake-up call on Day 1 for a spectacular hot air balloon ride across the countryside. We worked closely with both our Abercrombie & Kent representative and the barge crew to craft an itinerary tailored to our family’s interests.
Day 1: Boarding The Meanderer in Montbouy
We were picked up at our hotel in Paris (Le Royal Monceau – Raffles) and whisked away to Montbouy, where we boarded The Meanderer. We spent a lovely afternoon getting acquainted with the barge and crew, then made a short cruise to turn the boat around and prepare for the locks the next morning. Later, we explored the quaint village of Montbouy before enjoying our first dinner on board. The day ended with champagne in the hot tub under the stars, with the lights of the 11th-century Église Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Blaise (Church of Our Lady of Saint Blaise) twinkling nearby. A magical start to our adventure.
Over the course of the week, we would travel approximately 52 kilometers (about 32 miles) along the Briare Canal, from Montbouy to Léré—slowly and peacefully winding our way through the heart of the French countryside.

Day 2: Hot Air Balloon Ride and Fontainebleau
We began the day with a pre-dawn wake-up call for a once-in-a-lifetime experience—soaring over the French countryside in a hot air balloon. Just as the sun began to rise, we gently lifted off the ground, drifting silently above fields, farms, and sleepy towns. The peacefulness was surreal; it felt as though we were completely alone in the world, save for the occasional early riser enjoying their morning coffee and shouting a cheerful “Bonjour!†with a wave from below.
We were lucky with the winds that morning and floated directly over The Meanderer, catching a breathtaking glimpse of our reflection in the canal—my favorite photo of the trip, without a doubt. Upon landing in a farmer’s field, we were warmly greeted by the balloon company’s ground crew, who had picked a lovely bouquet of wildflowers and were waiting with champagne and fresh croissants. It was a perfect, storybook ending to a magical morning.
Later that afternoon, after lunch and our first official cruise down the Briare Canal—passing through some of the region’s iconic locks—we set out for a land excursion to Fontainebleau. Constructed across the 15th and 16th centuries, the Château de Fontainebleau was Napoleon’s final residence in France. Walking through its lavish rooms and strolling the beautifully landscaped gardens gave us a deeper appreciation for the country’s layered history and regal past.
That evening, we moored in Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, home to the historic Seven Lock Staircase—a perfect and symbolic location, as our journey through the Briare Canal was just beginning to unfold.

Day 3: Exploring Montargis and La Gazonne
After a delightful breakfast on board, we set out for the village of Montargis, where we spent the morning strolling its medieval streets adorned with vibrant floral displays. With its network of canals and charming bridges, it’s easy to see why Montargis is affectionately known as the “Venice of Gâtinais.†The peaceful ambiance and old-world charm made it a lovely stop, perfect for a leisurely walk and a bit of local exploration.
The afternoon was spent relaxing on The Meanderer’s upper deck, soaking in the sun and watching the picturesque countryside drift by. This stretch of the canal was lined with elegant châteaux and rich with wildlife—a quiet, serene contrast to the bustling cities we’d left behind.
By late afternoon, we arrived at our mooring point in La Gazonne, a scenic lake and nature reserve that plays a vital role in supplying water to the Briare Canal system. The peacefulness of the area and the natural beauty surrounding us made it a memorable stop.
After dinner, we hopped on the provided bicycles and pedaled to the nearby village of Ouzouer-sur-Trézée. We were especially charmed by the local church and its adjacent gardens, which included a small amphitheater—an unexpected and delightful discovery that added yet another unique memory to our journey.

Day 4: Chateau de Saint-Fargeau and Briare Market
After breakfast, we set out with our First Mate to explore Château de Saint-Fargeau and its namesake village. The château had a more modest, lived-in charm compared to the opulence of Fontainebleau, which made it feel more approachable and authentic. The highlight was exploring the attic, where we wandered through old storage areas tucked beneath the rafters. Being up close to the craftsmanship of the original timber structures was a rare and fascinating experience.
After touring the château, we strolled through the quiet village and enjoyed a refreshing cold drink in the afternoon sun.
Upon returning to The Meanderer, we set off toward our overnight mooring in the village of Briare. This afternoon, our chef invited us to join him for a tour of the village market, where he selected fresh, local ingredients for that evening’s dinner. We also made a delicious stop at the highly acclaimed chocolate shop Chocolats et Chimères—a sweet highlight of the day!
Later that evening, we relaxed in the hot tub, watching the lights of the village shimmer under a moody, atmospheric sky. It was a spectacular end to another fabulous day.

Day 5: Guedelon Castle and Briare Aqueduct
After a bit of a sleep-in and a leisurely breakfast, we set off to visit Guédelon Castle—a truly remarkable and educational highlight of the trip. This ongoing project to build a 13th-century castle using only period-accurate materials and techniques was both inspiring and fascinating. From hand-forged tools and stone carving to tile-making and large-scale pulley systems for moving heavy materials, every detail offered a deep dive into medieval craftsmanship. It felt like stepping back in time, and it was one of the most memorable stops of our journey.
After lunch, we began our much-anticipated crossing of the Pont Canal de Briare. Gliding over the Loire River on this impressive canal bridge was a unique and unforgettable experience. The views of the river valley below were absolutely breathtaking, with wide expanses of greenery and shimmering water stretching in every direction.
The rest of the afternoon was spent cruising at a leisurely pace. In a delightful surprise, our chef hosted an onboard cooking activity where he taught us how to make trout soufflé—a fun and interactive way to connect with French cuisine.
We ended the day moored in the charming village of Beaulieu-sur-Loire, full and content after another perfect day on the water.

Day 6: Sancerre Wine Tasting and Final Cruise
Today marked our final full day aboard The Meanderer, and it’s safe to say we’ve all developed a deep appreciation for Sancerre wine over the course of the trip. Wanting to explore this further, we requested a winery visit—and our First Mate graciously arranged a tour of the Henri Bourgeois Family Winery. The cellars were fascinating to explore, and the tasting was a true treat. We were delighted to purchase a case to bring home—a perfect souvenir to help us relive the experience long after the trip ends.
The afternoon was spent unwinding on the top deck, soaking in the peace and quiet as the canal gently carried us through the countryside. With nowhere to be and nothing to do but enjoy the moment, time seemed to slow in the most wonderful way.
Our final dinner on board was especially memorable. We shared stories and laughter with the crew, reflecting on the incredible week we’d had. It was the perfect ending to a trip that had far exceeded our expectations.
Tonight, The Meanderer moored in the village of Léré, quietly preparing for our departure the next morning.
