The Fairmont Banff Springs has always been more than just a hotel to me — it’s a cherished part of my story, an icon nestled in the heart of our corner of the Canadian Rockies. Alongside its sister, the Chateau Lake Louise, it stands as one of the most breathtaking landmarks in the world. I’ve been fortunate to walk its halls for over 35 years, including on one of the most unforgettable days of my life — my wedding, nearly three decades ago. I’ve watched her change with the times, gracefully evolving while still holding onto the soul that first captivated me. Through the years, she’s become a keeper of memories, a silent witness to so many milestones. She holds a place in my heart that time can only deepen.

How does one begin to write about one of Canada’s most storied icons? The Fairmont Banff Springs is more than stone and timber — it is a living chronicle nestled deep in the heart of the Rockies. From the deep-rooted histories of the Indigenous peoples who first walked these lands, to the iron-willed railroaders who carved paths through mountain passes, to the whispers of European royalty who once wandered its grand halls — this little corner of the world has stories etched into every shadow and stone. And still, it continues to write new ones.

Perhaps you’re planning to add your own chapter to the grand, ever-growing story of this legendary hotel. The Fairmont Banff Springs — always evolving, always welcoming — has recently undergone a series of thoughtful upgrades. From refreshed club rooms to new common area carpets, she continues to marry her historic charm with modern comfort, never missing a step in her role as gracious host to the world.

The Fairmont Gold floor has become a favourite of ours. The rooms, bathed in light and styled with contemporary elegance, offer a serene retreat. Yes, some of the bathrooms remain modest in size — a nod to the architectural constraints of a building over a century old — but the ambiance more than makes up for it. There’s something about staying on those floors that feels like a quiet privilege.

The Gold Lounge has always impressed with its offerings. Mornings begin with a hearty breakfast that ranges from fresh continental fare to indulgent Eggs Benedict, ensuring you’re well-fueled for whatever mountain adventure or relaxing stroll you choose. And in the afternoons, the canapé spread is both generous and satisfying — the kind of detail that turns a stay into a memory.

A perfect day at the Fairmont Banff Springs often begins — or perhaps lingers — in the serenity of the spa. We’ll spend hours enjoying massages, easing into the warmth of the mineral pools, letting time slow down. Afterward, an aperitif in the Rundle Lounge feels like a gentle return to the world — the atmosphere always humming with just the right mix of refinement and comfort.

Dinner, more often than not, is a quiet indulgence at Grapes, a gem tucked away within what was once the hotel’s original writing room. This intimate space exudes the historic charm of the hotel’s early days, and it has long been one of our favourites. We’ve spent many evenings here savoring beautifully curated charcuterie and fondue. The homemade pickles and wine pairings are always memorable, and there was a time when the fondue was even prepared tableside at the bar counter by the hostess — a delightful touch that made the evening feel even more personal.
