Why You’ll Love the Grassi Lakes Trail

What makes Grassi Lakes so loved? First: it’s super accessible. The trailhead sits inside Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, just a short drive from downtown Canmore. Even from Calgary, it’s a doable day trip that brings you right into the heart of the Rockies.

Second: it’s versatile. You’re not locked into one path, you get to pick your experience. That means both easy-going nature lovers and adventure seekers can enjoy the same destination, just by choosing a different route up.

Trail Options: Easy, Hard, or a Bit of Both

Once you arrive at the trailhead, you’ll immediately notice a fork in the path. One way leads to a gentler, wider route. The other heads into the woods with steep switchbacks and sweeping views.

Upper Grassi Lakes Trail – The Easy Day Out

  • This route follows a wide old Forest Service road.
  • The grade is gentle and gradual.
  • It’s a great choice for families, casual hikers, or anyone who just wants a relaxed walk up to the lakes.

This trail gets you moving through shaded forest, and soon enough you’ll find yourself approaching two small, stunning alpine lakes tucked beneath towering cliffs. Sit, breathe, soak it all in – it’s the perfect outdoor adventure without the strain.

Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail – For the Views

  • This is the steeper route that climbs through trees and along a mountain stream.
  • You’ll earn early views of Lawrence Grassi Waterfall, then expansive panoramas over Canmore and the Bow Valley.
  • It’s still very doable – most hikers finish in under 2 hours, but it rewards you with more wow moments along the way.

Many locals and visitors choose a hybrid approach: hike up the Interpretive Trail for the scenery, and then loop back down the easier Upper Trail to rest tired legs. It’s a perfect way to explore both routes and get the best of both worlds.

What to Expect on the Hike

Let’s talk numbers

  • Distance: ~3.8 km round trip (it varies slightly depending on which route combo you choose).
  • Elevation Gain: ~120-180m, enough to get your heart excited, stole my breath a few times!
  • Time: Most hikers take 1.5 – 3 hours total, including snack and photo breaks.

These stats make Grassi Lakes the perfect gateway hike: scenic, rewarding, and achievable, even if you’ve told yourself you’re not really a hiker.

Tips to Make This Hike Even Better

Here are a few things we’ve learned (and you’ll be glad you knew ahead of time):

Go Early or Late

This trail fills up, especially on summer weekends. Parking can be tight, and mid-day crowds can dull the magic. Sunrise or sunset hikes here? Absolute bliss, quieter trails and softer light on the lakes.

Respect Wildlife

You’re hiking in real Rocky Mountain habitat. Bears, moose, and other creatures roam these woods. Be bear-aware, make noise through the forest, and carry bear spray if you have it. Being safe just makes the experience better for everyone.

Parking & Passes

Because you’re in Kananaskis Country, you’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park at the trailhead. Plan ahead, buy one online, and avoid the annoyance of last-minute stops.

Stay Fueled & Hydrated

This isn’t a long trail, but the views are worth lingering for. Pack extra water, snacks, and maybe even a picnic lunch to enjoy by the lakes.

Seasonal Notes: When to Visit

The trail is open year-round, and winter hikers often enjoy snowy peace if you’ve got traction gear. Just know that the Interpretive Trail can be icy and may be closed for safety in the coldest months.

Summer and shoulder seasons (late spring and early fall) are ideal; wildflowers, cool mountain breezes, and vibrant lake colours make the experience unforgettable.
