Where the “Queens Hotel” once stood, the Fairmont Royal York hotel began to take shape in early 1927, under the direction of architects Ross and Macdonald. Upon completion it became the largest and most opulent hotel in the British Empire. When the doors opened in 1929, it ignited a social whirlwind, drawing everyone from Hollywood A-listers to royalty alike.
Nearly a century later, this Toronto icon has been revitalized, housing modern elegance within its historic and legendary structure and now featuring Fairmont Gold- a luxurious residential-style retreat within the hotel.
I never miss out on wandering through the halls of the Fairmont Hotels, reading the plaques among the various photos and memorabilia; I was captivated by a 1929 gala photo, imagining the glamour of that era!

Location, Location, Location
Not only does the Royal York boast the upmost comfort, all the amenities you could dream of, and plenty of options for delectable dining, but the location is unbeatable. Steps from the main entrance, Union Station connects you to Toronto’s pulse.
Within a 15-minute walk, explore the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, Museum of Illusions, or St. Lawrence Market arrive hungry with a reusable bag for a morning of culinary delights! Venture further to the Toronto Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, or the Distillery District (my absolute favorite, I couldn’t get over the beauty of it) for a bite and a cold pint.
Love shopping? Yorkdale Shopping Centre awaits, with Kensington Market right nearby. And for any Canadian sport fan, the Rogers Centre is a mere 7 minute jaunt- go Blue Jays!

Choose Fairmont Rooms for classic elegance, Signature Rooms for a modern vibe, or Fairmont Gold for an exclusive retreat with private lounge access, complimentary breakfast, afternoon appetizers, an all-day Honour Bar, and dedicated concierge service.
Travelling with family? No need to pack up half the house, they will provide access to items such as cribs, highchairs, and even children’s bath robes (it’s their vacation too right?!) Don’t forget about the fur babies! Small pets are warmly welcomed (for a fee).
And of course, don’t forget to delight with Le Labo bath amenities, turning your bathroom into a spa-like sanctuary. I was thrilled with the plush bedding and pillows, perfect for a dreamy sleep, and waking to savor my morning Nespresso coffee from the in-room machine in my cozy oversized Fairmont Robe.
My only regret? Not requesting a city view next time, I’ll aim for that skyline sparkle- your girl loves a view!
Dining Done Right
Fairmont hotels are synonymous with culinary excellence, and the Fairmont Royal York’s dining scene is a true delight. I make it a ritual to visit every dining spot at least once per stay, and this trip was no exception.
CLOCKWORK, the revamped lobby bar with its striking central clock, pulses with electric sophistication and energy. Their masterfully crafted cocktails like the sparkling Rose 31 Spritz, bursting with floral notes, or the Toronto Mule, a local twist on the classic with a fiery ginger kick elevate any evening. Pair them with delectable small plates or enjoy a glass of champagne with a hearty breakfast.
And of course- book in for the time- honoured tradition of Afternoon Tea served every Saturday and Sunday; a timeless tradition of delicate pastries and teas.
After a morning wandering Toronto’s streets, we slipped into the Library Bar, a cozy, 1950s-speakeasy-inspired haven exuding timeless alure. Martini aficionados, this coveted martini institution is unmissable!
At REIGN, the commitment to local, organic, sustainable ingredients over 50% from Ontario and Canadian producers shines in every dish. My seared duck breast with farro, cherry gastrique, and glazed vegetables was a close-your-eyes-and-smile moment. Marissa’s vibrant green pea risotto burst with freshness, and we couldn’t resist sharing bites.

Fun Fact: In 2008, the Fairmont Royal York pioneered the world’s first city hotel rooftop apiary, housing 600,000 honeybees that produce around 450 pounds of honey annually for guests delight.

The quaint indoor pool and hot tub were perfect for morning laps or soaking tired feet after exploring downtown Toronto.
