And thanks to the Sunshine Gondola, it’s one of the easiest ways to experience this kind of high-alpine scenery without tackling a strenuous climb.
When Jane visited Sunshine Meadows, she explored Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix Lakes, following the trails through open meadows surrounded by seemingly endless mountain peaks.
What stood out most wasn’t one dramatic summit.
It was how peaceful the entire experience felt.

Is the Sunshine Meadows Hike Worth It?
Absolutely.
Sunshine Meadows is one of those rare places where accessibility doesn’t mean sacrificing the wow factor.
Instead of spending hours climbing through the forest to reach the alpine, the Sunshine Gondola carries you high into the mountains, where you can spend your time actually exploring the meadows, lakes, and viewpoints.
And the scenery starts almost immediately.
You’ll find open alpine meadows, wildflowers, endless mountain peaks, and three beautiful lakes—Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix.
The obvious downside is the cost. This isn’t a free hiking day, and the gondola makes Sunshine Meadows considerably more expensive than most hikes in Banff.
But you’re paying for incredibly easy access to a high-alpine environment that would normally require a much more strenuous climb to reach.
If you want beautiful mountain scenery, manageable hiking, and the flexibility to choose how far you go, we think Sunshine Meadows is worth it.
Sunshine Meadows Trail & Difficulty
Unlike many hikes in Banff, Sunshine Meadows isn’t really one single trail.
It’s a network of connected trails and loops, which means you can customize the day depending on how much hiking you want to do.

- Time: Approximately 4–5 hours to explore the broader trail network

One of the most popular routes crosses the Continental Divide and continues toward Rock Isle Lake.
From there, you can extend your hike onto the Grizzly-Larix Lakes Loop, explore more of the surrounding meadows, or combine several trails into a longer hiking day.
That flexibility is one of the things we love about Sunshine Meadows.
If you want a relatively relaxed sightseeing day, you can keep your hike shorter and focus on the main viewpoints.
If you want to spend several hours exploring, continue farther into the trail network and visit all three lakes.
The terrain is generally manageable, but don’t mistake gondola access for a completely flat walk.
You’re still hiking in the mountains.
Expect uneven gravel, rocks, roots, steps, and some narrower sections along the way. Proper hiking shoes are a good idea even if you’re sticking to the easier routes.

How to Get to Sunshine Meadows
Sunshine Meadows is accessed through Banff Sunshine Village, just outside the town of Banff.
From Banff, head west on the Trans-Canada Highway and take the Sunshine Village exit. Follow the access road until you reach the base area and parking lot.
From there, you’ll board the Sunshine Gondola.
The gondola ride takes approximately 25 minutes, gradually carrying you above the forest and up to Sunshine Village.
And honestly, the ride itself is part of the experience.
As you climb, the Rockies slowly begin to open up around you and the world below starts to feel farther and farther away.
Once you reach Sunshine Village, you can continue onto the Standish Sightseeing Chairlift, which takes approximately another eight minutes and brings you even higher into the alpine.

Sunshine Village also operates a complimentary summer shuttle from Banff, which is worth considering if you don’t want to drive.
The easiest way to explore Banff, Canmore, and the surrounding Canadian Rockies is still by car.

Sunshine Gondola & Standish Chairlift
The gondola is what makes Sunshine Meadows such a unique hiking experience.
Rather than using most of your energy just getting into the alpine, you arrive surrounded by mountain scenery and can decide how much hiking you actually want to do.
For summer 2026, Sunshine currently lists sightseeing operations from July 6 through September 20.
The Sunshine Gondola operates from 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, while the Standish Sightseeing Chairlift operates from 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
The gondola ride takes approximately 25 minutes and the chairlift takes about eight minutes.
Your sightseeing ticket includes access to the Standish Chairlift, so I would absolutely take advantage of it.
It brings you within easy walking distance of the Standish Viewing Deck, where you can take in panoramic views over Sunshine Meadows before continuing onto the trails.
Sunshine recommends reaching the Village no later than 3:30 PM if you want enough time to enjoy the sightseeing area.
If you want time to properly explore, I’d plan to arrive much earlier.
This isn’t somewhere you want to rush.
How Much Does Sunshine Meadows Cost?
Sunshine Meadows is definitely more expensive than your typical hiking day.
For summer 2026, current Gondola & Chairlift prices are:
- Adult (18+): $80 + GST
- Senior (65+): $70 + GST
- Youth (13–17): $40 + GST
- Child (6–12): $20 + GST
- Toddler (0–5): Free
- Family: $189 + GST for two adults plus up to four youth/children
The Standish Sightseeing Chairlift is included with the gondola ticket.
You’ll also need a valid Parks Canada pass because Sunshine Village is located within Banff National Park.
Is it cheap?
No.
But you’re not just paying for a sightseeing gondola ride.
Once you reach the top, you can spend hours exploring the trails, lakes, viewpoints, and alpine meadows.
For us, that makes it a much more complete experience than simply riding up a mountain, taking a photo, and heading straight back down.

Where to Stay Near Sunshine Meadows
Banff is the most convenient place to stay if Sunshine Meadows is high on your itinerary.
You’ll be close to the Sunshine Village access road while still having easy access to Banff’s restaurants, shops, lakes, and other attractions.

Parking & Facilities
Parking is available at the Sunshine Village base area.
Once you reach Sunshine Village at the top of the gondola, you’ll also find washrooms and places to eat, making this a much easier hiking day to plan than some of the more remote trails in the Canadian Rockies.
Before heading out, make sure you have:
- Plenty of drinking water
- Snacks
- Bear spray
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Sunglasses
- A hat
- Proper hiking shoes
- Layers
- A rain jacket
Sunshine Meadows sits high in the mountains, and alpine weather can change incredibly quickly.
A warm, sunny morning in Banff doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have the same conditions once you’re standing more than 2,000 metres above sea level.
This is also an important wildlife area and a fragile alpine environment.
Stay on designated trails, carry bear spray, give wildlife plenty of space, and never feed the animals.
Jane’s Experience Hiking Sunshine Meadows
Jane & Mark’s day at Sunshine Meadows began quietly, gliding above the forest on the Sunshine Gondola as the Rockies slowly unfolded beneath them…
With every passing minute, the world below felt a little farther away.
And then suddenly you’re standing in the alpine.
Wide-open meadows.
Mountain peaks in every direction.
And lakes so clear they almost don’t look real.
They explored Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix Lakes, following the trails through wildflower-filled meadows surrounded by some of the most peaceful scenery in Banff National Park.
What stood out most wasn’t one dramatic viewpoint.
It was the feeling of the entire place.
The water was impossibly clear, the mountain air incredibly fresh, and for stretches of the hike, there was little more than the sound of the wind moving through the alpine grasses.
It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow your pace.
To stop.
To breathe.
To simply take it all in.
And I think that’s part of what makes Sunshine Meadows so special.
Not every memorable hike needs to end on a summit.
Sometimes the experience along the way is the entire point.
Standish Viewing Deck
If you take the Standish Sightseeing Chairlift, make time for the Standish Viewing Deck.
The chairlift carries you even higher above Sunshine Village, and from the top it’s a relatively short walk to the viewing area.
From here, you can look out across Sunshine Meadows, alpine lakes, and the surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks.
It’s a huge amount of scenery for very little effort.
And because the chairlift is already included with your gondola ticket, there’s really no reason to skip it if the weather is cooperating.

Rock Isle Lake
Rock Isle Lake is probably the most iconic lake at Sunshine Meadows.
The trail crosses the Continental Divide before continuing toward a viewpoint overlooking the lake.
Surrounded by alpine meadows and dramatic mountain peaks, it’s easy to understand why this is one of Sunshine Meadows’ signature views.
The water is beautifully clear, and the entire setting feels quintessentially Canadian Rockies.
If you have limited time and can only visit one of the lakes, Rock Isle Lake would be the one I’d prioritize.
But if you have the time and energy, keep going.
Grizzly Lake & Larix Lake
Beyond Rock Isle Lake, you can continue onto the Grizzly-Larix Lakes Loop.
This section takes you farther into the Sunshine Meadows trail network and gives you the chance to explore two more beautiful alpine lakes.
My mom visited both Grizzly Lake and Larix Lake during her day at Sunshine Meadows, and together with Rock Isle, the three lakes were one of the highlights of the experience.
There’s something special about moving from one alpine lake to another instead of hiking toward one single destination.
Each feels a little different.
And the trails connecting them become just as much a part of the experience as the lakes themselves.
Three pristine alpine lakes connected by trails through wildflower-filled meadows and surrounded by Rocky Mountain peaks?
That’s a pretty hard combination to beat.
Lunch at Trappers Mountain Grill
Before heading home, my mom stopped at Trappers Mountain Grill for lunch back at Sunshine Village.
After several hours outside, being able to sit down for a proper meal without leaving the mountain is a pretty nice bonus.
She sat outside on the patio, where she ended up sharing the space with one of Sunshine’s curious local residents—a Columbian ground squirrel happily going about its afternoon as though everyone around it was simply part of the scenery.
It was such a small moment, but one of those little travel memories that sticks with you.
A quiet patio.
Mountains all around.
And a tiny local wandering past your table.
A pretty perfect ending to the day.
Best Time to Hike Sunshine Meadows
Sunshine Meadows has a relatively short summer hiking season.
For 2026, the sightseeing gondola and Standish Chairlift are scheduled to operate from July 6 through September 20.
July and August are especially beautiful if you’re hoping to see green alpine meadows and summer wildflowers.
September can also be a gorgeous time to visit, with cooler temperatures and changing alpine colours.
But this is the Canadian Rockies.
Weather can change quickly at this elevation, even in the middle of summer.
Check the current Sunshine Meadows trail report, weather forecast, and Parks Canada trail conditions before heading out.

If you want a strenuous hike where reaching the summit feels like the accomplishment, Banff has plenty of those.
But if you want a scenic day that’s more about enjoying the mountains than conquering them, Sunshine Meadows deserves a spot on your Canadian Rockies itinerary.
Sometimes the greatest luxury really is just having the time to be somewhere this beautiful.
