First Impressions Of Fairmont Tokyo

From the moment we arrived, the Fairmont Tokyo charmed us with its refined style and inviting atmosphere. Upon entering our room, we were immediately captivated by the Tokyo view. We spent our first night simply soaking in the atmosphere—watching the setting sun, seeing the city lights come to life, and letting the motion of the city enchant us after a long day of driving. The room itself was spacious, thoughtfully designed, and impeccably comfortable. The king bed invited us to sink in and relax, making it easy to drift off after full days of exploring, while every detail—from the lighting to the amenities—felt carefully curated for comfort and style.

A particularly lovely touch was finding clean pajamas laid out on the bed each night—such a simple but wonderful amenity. The only minor quibble would be the house coat; while soft and cozy, they were hilariously oversized, leaving us feeling like characters in a Looney Tunes scene. We even called the front desk to see if smaller sizes were available, but alas, no luck.

Guest Perks & First-Class Service

Upon check-in, we were delighted to receive a card for two complimentary drinks at Driftwood and were informed that all dining was 20% off for in-house guests. We’re not sure if this was a limited-time promotion or a standard guest benefit, but it was a thoughtful touch that made us feel welcome from the start.

A special note about the staff at the hotel entrance—the bellmen were outstanding and truly a pleasure to engage with. From assisting with luggage, arranging taxis, and helping with luggage transport to offering restaurant tips, they were efficient, knowledgeable, and always approachable. They even pointed out that a Lawson convenience store is just across the road, which was a helpful touch for any quick needs.

The Infinity Pool & Spa Experience

We began our first early morning at the spa—there’s nothing quite like floating in a 35th-floor infinity pool all by yourselves. The night before, our concierge had mentioned we might be lucky enough to see Mt. Fuji from our room, and as it happens, our first morning dawned bright and clear with a magnificent view of the mountain.

A little in-room coffee and our lounge pajamas had us gazing at the vista for quite some time. With the day free of any itinerary, we decided to carry that same moment into the spa, spending an hour soaking in the serenity and enjoying the cityscape and Mt. Fuji from above. Between the sauna, steam rooms, and serene relaxation areas, it felt like a private sanctuary above the city. Who needs to be a billionaire when you can enjoy this level of luxury?

One quirky but memorable note for us was the spa’s policy on swimming caps—if you plan to submerge your head in the pool, a cap is required. The hotel thoughtfully provides them, and they kindly ask that you return them when you leave the spa. It was a small detail, but one that added to the sense of order and care throughout the experience.

Breakfast At The Kiln And Tonic

Breakfast at The Kiln and Tonic was a delight—a kaleidoscope of exquisite flavors. Mark particularly enjoyed the Turkish eggs, while I couldn’t get enough of the mini donuts. Throughout our time in Japan, we’ve noticed that flavors tend to be subtle and refined, rather than the bold flavor bombs often found at home. This felt perfectly fitting, reflecting the general respectfulness we encountered everywhere: food doesn’t need to be manipulated or over-enhanced to shine in its natural texture and taste. Over-sweetened or over-spiced dishes were simply not a thing.

Exploring Tokyo From Fairmont Tokyo

On our way out for our first day of exploring, we stopped by the front desk for some local advice on transportation and sights. We were fortunate to speak with a very knowledgeable staff member who provided us with a Tokyo map and carefully highlighted all the areas and places we asked about. She recommended downloading the Suica Mobile app—an Apple-based transport and payment app—which worked fantastically. She also guided us on which train to take and how long it would take to walk back from Harajuku Station. Her advice made navigating the city so much easier and set the tone for a smooth, enjoyable first day of exploration.

Fairmont Tokyo Location

The hotel’s location is exceptional. Slightly removed from the typical tourist hotspots, it offers a moment or two to experience another side of Tokyo, creating a sense of calm rather than the constant stimulation of busier areas. We loved that Hamamatsucho Train Station is just a five-minute walk, and Shinagawa Station—gateway to the Shinkansen—is six minutes by train or 10–15 minutes by taxi.

Another convenient feature is that, while the hotel occupies the 35th–43rd floors of the Blue Front Shibaura Tower South, the building’s first three floors house a food market and court, as well as a convenience store selling everything from the famous Japanese egg salad sandwich to beer, underwear, and umbrellas.

Along the walkway from the hotel to Hamamatsucho Station, there’s a wonderful coffee shop that’s perfect for an early morning stop. It’s fabulous for observing the rhythms of Tokyo’s daily life—the order of the salaried men and how they move in unison is quite stunning, almost like a choreography of the city.

Using Luggage Forwarding In Japan

As we were heading to Kyoto by Shinkansen after our stay in Tokyo, we decided to ship our luggage the day before. The hotel offers a convenient courier service for this purpose. We needed to have our luggage to them by 3:00 p.m. in order for it to arrive at our Kyoto hotel by check-in. We shipped three bags, which cost 7,130 yen, and the process was smooth and hassle-free—a very convenient option for travelers navigating Japan by train.

Driftwood Bar & Grill Review

After starting the evening with some champagne at the lobby lounge, we made our way up to Driftwood Bar and Grill on the 43rd floor to enjoy a night out with friends. The space is glamorous, with delightful cocktails and a menu that leans toward a Western edge—the burger was especially yummy!

The servers were very engaging and even shared clever techniques for taking photos without the window glare. We had a most enjoyable time catching up with friends while taking in the breathtaking city views. Overall, it was a very fun and memorable evening.

Overall, our four-night stay at the Fairmont Tokyo was exceptional. Between the luxurious accommodations, thoughtful amenities, breathtaking views, helpful and knowledgeable staff, and the serene yet convenient location, every moment felt cared for and effortless. We left feeling relaxed, inspired, and already imagining a return visit.
