Best Day Trip from Rome: 3 Hidden Villages You Need to See

Post by Jane
Fumone
Anagni

Craving a slice of history, a dose of charm, and a break from Rome’s bustling streets, all in one short trip? This itinerary for hidden hilltop villages south of Rome might be exactly what you’re looking for. Perfect as a day trip from Rome, or as a stop on a longer Amalfi Coast/Naples adventure, it’s an experience that lingers long after you leave.

Table of Contents

  1. Discover Fumone: A Village Frozen in Time
  2. Exploring Anagni: The City of Popes
  3. A Hidden Gem in Ferentino
  4. See Jane’s Lake Como Itinerary for more Italian Adventures!

Discover Fumone: A Village Frozen in Time

Just an hour and 20 minutes south of Fiumicino Airport lies the small hilltop village of Fumone, one of the best hidden gems south of Rome. Here, time seems to have slowed down, and the cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and panoramic views offer a serene escape from the city.

We settled into our accommodation at Fumone for 2 nights and used this as our base for exploring a couple more villages in the area.

Stay inside the village walls at the charming Locanda Il Falco Nero, and park just outside the Comune walls and explore on foot. As you wander the ancient paths, you’ll encounter Fumone Castle, a former Papal fortress with a fascinating history of imprisoned popes, inheritance disputes, and even ghost stories. Don’t miss the castles rooftop gardens, perfect for taking in the sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

A Sweet Pause and an Aperitivo

Take a break at Bar del Castello in Fumones town square, where you can enjoy a relaxing aperitivo. And if you have a sweet tooth, stop by Fantasia del Dolce for their delightful lemon biscuits; the perfect companion to your coffee or afternoon tea.

An Evening to Remember

End your day with an unforgettable dinner at La Taverna del Barone (reservations are a must). Course after course of homemade Italian perfection awaits, paired with exceptional wine and traditional entertainment. Trust me, it’s one of the best evenings you can spend in Italy, and a memory you’ll treasure forever.

Exploring Anagni: The City of Popes

September in Italy feels like a secret whispered just to you. The summer crowds drift away, leaving quiet streets, golden light, and the rare gift of having history all to yourself.

In Anagni, an ancient town south of Rome known as the City of Popes, we wandered through time. Beneath the soaring arches of the Cathedral of Santa Maria, across its ancient Cosmati floor, and into the hushed glow of the Crypt of St. Magnus, where frescoes shimmer with colors that have endured for nearly a thousand years.

In the Oratory of St. Thomas Becket, faded saints and stories still linger on the walls, a gentle reminder that even in decay, beauty remains.

And then a long, lingering lunch at Vittorio Emanuele. Handmade pasta, a glass of wine, and views that seemed to stretch into forever. Pure dolce vita.

Ferentino Church

A Hidden Gem in Ferentino

On our way back to Rome after two nights in Fumone, we stopped at the Acropolis in Ferentino, and what a treasure it was! A quiet stroll through the ancient city revealed Roman markets carved into stone and weathered wooden doors that feel as though they’ve stood beyond time itself.

At the heart of the acropolis stands the Romanesque Cathedral of St. John and Paul, founded in the 9th century atop the remains of a Roman temple. Its soaring roof and unmatched craftsmanship left us in awe; a true layering of history where centuries whisper through every arch and stone.

Just around the corner, the small 13th-century Church of Santa Maria dei Cavalieri Gaudenti whispers stories of the knights who once used it, a quiet gem tucked into Ferentino’s historic streets.

From the hilltop charm of Fumone, to the timeless beauty of Anagni, and the hidden treasures of Ferentino, this little corner south of Rome feels like a secret waiting to be discovered. Quiet streets, centuries-old history, and moments of pure dolce vita make it the perfect escape from the crowds.

Whether you’re sipping an aperitivo in a sunlit square, wandering through frescoed cathedrals, or enjoying a long, leisurely meal with views that stretch for miles, this itinerary reminds you that the magic of Italy isn’t only in its famous cities, it’s in the stories whispered by every stone, every arch, and every quiet street along the way.

So take a step off the beaten path, let the golden September light guide you, and let the South of Rome reveal its treasures, one unforgettable moment at a time.
