Some road trips are about getting to the destination.
This one is just as much about everything along the way.
Our Vancouver to Ucluelet road trip took us from the city and harbour views of Vancouver to the sandy beaches of Parksville before crossing Vancouver Island toward the wild Pacific coast.
We spent five nights exploring Vancouver, Parksville, Ucluelet and Tofino, with stops at beaches, old-growth forests, breweries and some incredible places to eat along the way. And once we reached Ucluelet, we traded the road for the ocean with two unforgettable days of offshore fishing in the Broken Group Islands.
What we loved about this trip was how much variety we managed to fit into five nights.
City.
Beaches.
Forest.
The open Pacific.
And some seriously good food along the way.

Our 5-Night Vancouver Island Road Trip Itinerary
We kept this trip relatively short at five nights, but staying three nights in Ucluelet gave us enough time to slow down once we reached the Pacific coast.
Night 1: Vancouver
Start the trip in Vancouver with Stanley Park, Coal Harbour, good food and harbour views.
Night 2: Parksville
Take the Horseshoe Bay ferry to Nanaimo before continuing to Parksville for beaches, pizza and a much slower Vancouver Island pace.
Nights 3–5: Ucluelet
Drive across Vancouver Island toward the Pacific coast, using Ucluelet as your base for Tofino, beaches, restaurants and outdoor adventures.

Day 1: Vancouver Kickoff
Start your West Coast Canada adventure in the vibrant city of Vancouver. We landed and headed straight to Coal Harbour for a relaxing stay at the Westin Bayshore. Think stunning harbour views, float planes buzzing overhead, cocktails on the patio, and catching up with friends – the perfect city kickoff.
Morning in Vancouver

Taking the Ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island
After our morning in Vancouver, we headed to Horseshoe Bay to catch the ferry to Nanaimo.
And honestly, the ferry feels like part of the road trip.
As Vancouver disappears behind you, the route opens up to islands, mountains and coastline, giving you your first real taste of what’s coming.
Once you arrive in Nanaimo, you can continue north toward Parksville before eventually making your way west across Vancouver Island toward Ucluelet.

Day 2: Beach Vibes in Parksville
Welcome to Parksville, where long sandy shores and laid-back vibes await. We explored the stunning beaches of Rathtrevor and Qualicum Beach, perfect for a relaxing day by the water. For dinner, we grabbed a delicious pizza and pint at Mount Arrowsmith Brewery, a local gem!
Why Parksville?
- Rathtrevor Beach: Expansive sandy shores ideal for strolls or picnics.
- Qualicum Beach: A quieter spot to soak in the coastal beauty.
- Mount Arrowsmith Brewery: A must-visit for craft beer lovers and casual dining.
Days 3-5: Ucluelet & Tofino Adventures
From Parksville, we headed west across Vancouver Island toward Ucluelet — and this is where the road trip really started to feel wild.
The drive is incredibly scenic, but it’s also winding in sections, so this isn’t a day I’d rush. We made stops along the way before reaching Ucluelet, which became our home base for the next three nights.
Here’s roughly how we spent this part of the trip:
Day 3: Parksville → Cathedral Grove → Port Alberni → Ucluelet
Day 4: Explore Tofino + the Pacific Rim beaches
Day 5: Ucluelet + offshore fishing
Those three nights gave us time to explore the coast, eat incredibly well and get out on the Pacific without constantly packing up and moving to another hotel.

- Cathedral Grove: Walk among ancient towering trees in this magical forest.
- Barkley Cafe, Port Alberni: A funky stop for coffee and snacks.
- Island Surf Co.: Gear up for surf adventures with rentals or supplies.
What to Know Before Driving to Ucluelet
The drive across Vancouver Island is part of the experience, but there are a few things worth knowing before you go.
Give yourself extra time. The road becomes winding as you travel west, and this isn’t a drive you want to rush.
Fill up before you need to. Don’t treat this like city driving where another gas station is always around the corner.
Check conditions before leaving. Road conditions, construction and weather can affect travel times.
Pack for changing weather. Even during a beautiful summer trip, coastal weather can change quickly.
Book popular experiences ahead. If there’s a restaurant, accommodation or activity you absolutely don’t want to miss, make the reservation before arriving.

Day Trip to Tofino
Arrive early in Ucluelet and take a day trip to nearby Tofino for a mix of shopping, food, and beach vibes:

- The Fish Store: Grab some of the best smoked salmon you’ll ever taste.
- Tofino Brewing Co.: Pick up local craft beer for your evening unwind.
For lunch, head to Sandbar Bistro overlooking Long Beach, where you can watch surfers tackle the Pacific waves while enjoying fresh coastal cuisine. Afterward, dip your toes in the ocean or take a peaceful stroll along Wickaninnish Beach, a quieter, local-favorite shoreline.

Dining in Ucluelet

Offshore Fishing Adventure
For two unforgettable days, we ventured into the Broken Group Islands for offshore fishing with Maximum Coastal Adventures. Early 5 AM starts led to thrilling ocean action, blending wild adventure with the serenity of early morning on the water. Our guide, James, ensured we brought home fresh catch for homemade dinners.
Where We Stayed in Ucluelet
- Sea Star @ Terrace Beach: A total dream stay in Ucluelet. We spent evenings on the patio, swam in the bay, and cooked fresh catch dinners. This cozy spot is perfect for soaking in the West Coast vibe.
Should You Stay in Ucluelet or Tofino?
For this trip, we chose Ucluelet.
And I’d happily make the same choice again.
Tofino is absolutely worth visiting, but we loved being able to spend the day exploring and then return to a quieter home base in Ucluelet.
We stayed at Sea Star at Terrace Beach, where evenings meant sitting on the patio, swimming in the bay and cooking the fresh fish we’d caught earlier in the day.
If restaurants, shopping and being right in the middle of Tofino are your priorities, staying in Tofino may make more sense for you.
But for us, Ucluelet was perfect. We loved coming back after a full day of exploring, sitting by the water and just slowing everything down.
👉 Live to See Tip: Whichever town you choose, I’d stay for at least a few nights. This part of Vancouver Island deserves more than a rushed overnight stop.

Is a Vancouver to Ucluelet Road Trip Worth It?
Absolutely.
What makes this road trip so special is how quickly the scenery changes.
You can start your morning surrounded by Vancouver’s skyline, cross the Strait of Georgia by ferry, walk a huge sandy beach in Parksville and eventually find yourself surrounded by rainforest on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
And the farther west you drive, the wilder Vancouver Island begins to feel.
For us, it was the perfect mix of city, beaches, great food and West Coast adventure — with plenty of fun along the way!

How many days do you need for a Vancouver to Ucluelet road trip?
We did this trip in five nights, spending one night in Vancouver, one night in Parksville and three nights in Ucluelet.
That worked well for us, but if you have extra time, I’d add another night on the Pacific coast rather than trying to fit another destination into the itinerary.
Can you drive from Vancouver to Ucluelet?
Vancouver and Ucluelet are separated by the Strait of Georgia, so if you’re travelling with a car, your journey includes a ferry crossing to Vancouver Island.
We took the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo ferry and continued our road trip from there.
Is Ucluelet worth visiting?
Yes.
We loved Ucluelet as a quieter base for exploring this part of Vancouver Island.
It gave us access to Tofino and the surrounding Pacific coast while still feeling relaxed at the end of the day.
Should I stay in Tofino or Ucluelet?
It depends on the experience you want.
Tofino puts you closer to its restaurants, shops and town atmosphere, while we loved Ucluelet for its quieter feel and used it as our base for three nights.
Is the drive to Ucluelet difficult?
The drive is manageable, but sections are winding and narrow enough that you should give yourself plenty of time.
We found it incredibly scenic and treated the drive itself as part of the road trip.
What should you stop at between Parksville and Ucluelet?
We stopped at Cathedral Grove and Port Alberni before continuing toward Ucluelet.
Cathedral Grove was especially worthwhile if you want to experience Vancouver Island’s enormous old-growth trees.
Is Tofino worth visiting if you’re staying in Ucluelet?
Definitely.
We stayed in Ucluelet and visited Tofino as a day trip, combining food, shopping and time along the Pacific coast.
How long should you stay in Ucluelet?
We stayed three nights, which gave us enough time to explore the area and fit in some bigger experiences.
If you want a slower trip with hiking, beaches, surfing or other activities, adding another night would be easy to justify.
Final Thoughts
Some road trips are really about the destination.
This one wasn’t.
It was cocktails overlooking Coal Harbour.
The ferry pulling away from Vancouver.
Bare feet on the beaches around Parksville.
Driving beneath enormous trees on our way across Vancouver Island.
Early 5 AM mornings heading onto the Pacific.
Fresh fish for dinner.
And those quiet evenings back in Ucluelet when there was nowhere else we needed to be.
Five nights gave us a taste of this part of Vancouver Island.
But it also made me want more of it.
If I were planning the trip again, I wouldn’t add more stops.
I’d add more time.
Because the best part of travelling this coast isn’t checking Vancouver, Tofino or Ucluelet off a list.
It’s giving yourself enough time to actually experience them.
